Richard S. Hoffman

Richard S. "Rick" Hoffman was appointed executive vice president of mergers, acquisitions & business development in August 2004, reporting to Jim Sullivan, executive vice president, development. Prior to that time, he served as executive vice president of finance, eCommerce and in a similar capacity as senior vice president of finance. Mr. Hoffman began his career with Marriott as senior vice president, special projects in March 2000. In his current position, Mr. Hoffman has responsibility for leading and supervising the company's mergers and acquisition strategy and execution, including consideration of purchases of brands, management companies and portfolio of hotel assets. He also has responsibility for planning and execution of new business development within the Company.
Prior to joining Marriott, Mr. Hoffman was an attorney for eighteen years in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Williams & Connolly. In that capacity, he served as Marriott's lead counsel in several litigation matters. At Williams & Connolly, Mr. Hoffman specialized in litigation and business representation of real estate firms and management companies in various areas, including lodging, as well as representation of media companies in intellectual property matters.
Mr. Hoffman graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was awarded Order of the Coif and the Bates Memorial Scholarship as outstanding student in his class. He received his undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Washington University (St. Louis). Following graduation from law school, Mr. Hoffman served as a law clerk to the Honorable Prentice H. Marshall, a federal judge in the Northern District of Illinois.
Mr. Hoffman currently serves by appointment of the Governor of Maryland as a member of the Board of the University of Maryland Medical System (where he is chairman of the finance committee and a member of the executive committee), the largest hospital systemin Maryland. Mr. Hoffman also serves as Marriott's designated representative on the board of directors of i-Bahn, a leading internet service provider to the hospitality industry.
